Perhaps the most appealing aspect is that you can experience whatever Tunisia you want, based on what and who you want to see, as well as based on the kinds of stories you want to report back. These can range from up and coming extreme Islamists to the combination of the tightest skirt and highest heel you have ever witnessed. From the clearest beach, to the dingiest unfinished cement building. We have it all.

Chop Cassava has been documenting the Occupy Nigeria movement -...

Chop Cassava has been documenting the Occupy Nigeria movement - this videos is a recapitulation of what has been happening and a message that for many Nigerians, the fight is still not over.

Back to Rio de Janeiro. It seems that for the Ennahda party, self-proclaimed “moderate” islamists who now run the country, dialogue is a concept little practiced by its representatives.

Today, a religious police was instated and one of the party’s representatives declared on the most widely listened to radio station that women who do not wear the veil will go to hell.

This article by Robert Fisk in the Independent depicts the fears experienced by many secularists in Tunisia, myself included. One year ago, I felt drunk with freedom. Today, I feel like I am living with the worst hangover for which no cure is strong enough.

Perhaps what is most frightening and veritably disheartening, and what I once rejected with absolution, is the thought that Tunisia is a truly conservative nation who would rather listen to preachers endorse female genital mutilation than watch Lebanese popstar sensation Nancy Ajram shake her much admired booty at the Carthage Summer Festival.

Life is currently happening in Tunis.

Life is currently happening in Tunis.

Snapshots of Port au Prince and Les Cayes, Haiti.

Snapshots of Port au Prince and Les Cayes, Haiti.

An article from Good, ” Reconstruction Zone: Chronicling...

An article from Good, ” Reconstruction Zone: Chronicling Haiti’s Post-Quake Struggles.” With Tunisia celebrating the anniversary of the ‘official’ start of the Revolution, Haiti marking two years of reconstruction efforts after the infamous earthquake, and now Nigeria starting its own Occupy movement, it seems there is no end to the number of places you can care about, either through living there or simply visiting. Next week, I will be going to Haiti (for work) and experiencing what development professionals keep emphasizing cannot be grasped by reading articles, but only by seeing first hand. Reading this article provides insight into the current situation in Haiti and a preview of what to expect.
